Good morning, Toledo and welcome to the Toledo Dispatch's very first Restaurant of the Month! Each month, we'll visit a locally owned restaurant to highlight the food, atmosphere, and people behind some of the area's best dining destinations. We couldn't think of a better place to kick off the series than Home Slice Pizza.
For nearly two decades, Home Slice Pizza has been a downtown Toledo staple, serving handcrafted pizzas, sandwiches, wings, and late-night slices just steps from the city's entertainment district. Whether you're grabbing a quick lunch, fueling up before a Mud Hens game, or ending a night out with friends, Home Slice has built a reputation as one of Toledo's go-to pizza spots thanks to its creative specialty pies, welcoming atmosphere, and commitment to quality ingredients. This month, we stopped by to see what keeps locals coming back year after year and to find out if Home Slice deserves a place on every Toledo pizza lover's must-visit list.

Home Slice Exterior

Second Floor of Home Slice Pizza
Located in the heart of downtown Toledo, Home Slice Pizza has been serving locals and visitors for nearly two decades. The restaurant has become a favorite for everything from a quick lunch to a late-night meal after a Mud Hens game, concert, or night out downtown.
While Home Slice offers a full menu of pizzas, wings, salads, sandwiches, and more, it's perhaps best known for two things: its unique Potato Pizza and its late-night hours. The Potato Pizza has developed a loyal following thanks to its thinly sliced potatoes, crispy bacon, cheddar cheese, and creamy ranch base, offering a combination that stands out from the traditional pizza menu. Pair that with a kitchen that's open long after many downtown restaurants have closed, and it's easy to see why Home Slice has remained a Toledo favorite for so many years.

Home Slice Beer Menu

Pepperoni Pizza
Pepperoni Pizza
Sometimes the best way to judge a pizza place is by ordering the classic. Home Slice's Pepperoni Pizza keeps things simple, letting the quality of the ingredients do the talking. The crust is baked until perfectly crisp on the bottom while remaining light and chewy, creating the ideal foundation for a generous layer of melted mozzarella and plenty of pepperoni. The pepperoni crisps around the edges, adding just the right amount of spice and texture, while the house-made sauce provides a balanced flavor without overpowering the rest of the pie. It's the kind of pizza that's easy to recommend to anyone visiting for the first time and one we'd happily order again.

Buffalo chicken Pizza
Buffalo Chicken Pizza
If you're looking for something with a little more kick, the Buffalo Chicken Pizza is an easy choice. Topped with tender grilled chicken, a flavorful buffalo sauce, melted mozzarella, and a drizzle of ranch, every bite strikes a nice balance between heat and creaminess. The buffalo sauce brings plenty of flavor without being overwhelming, while the crispy crust holds up well under the generous toppings. It's a satisfying option for buffalo chicken fans and one of the standout specialty pizzas on Home Slice's menu.

Margherita Pizza
Margherita Pizza
The Margherita Pizza proves that simple ingredients can make a memorable pizza. Fresh mozzarella, ripe tomatoes, basil, and a flavorful tomato sauce come together on Home Slice's crisp, hand-tossed crust to create a light, fresh option that's packed with flavor. Each ingredient complements the next without overpowering it, allowing the quality of the toppings to shine through. If you're looking for something a little lighter than a traditional meat-loaded pizza, the Margherita is an excellent choice and a great reminder that sometimes less really is more.

Home Slice Full Menu
One of Home Slice's biggest strengths is the sheer variety on its menu. While pizza is the star of the show, there's plenty to choose from whether you're dining with family, meeting friends, or grabbing a late-night bite.
The pizza selection alone features more than a dozen specialty pies, ranging from classics like Pepperoni and Margherita to signature creations like the famous Potato Pizza, Buffalo Chicken, BBQ Chicken, Chicken Bacon Ranch, Steak "ZA," Spinach & Artichoke, and Hawaiian. You can also build their own pizza with a wide selection of meats, vegetables, and premium toppings.
Beyond pizza, the menu includes appetizers like cheese bread, mozzarella sticks, chicken chunks, wings, meatballs, spinach and artichoke dip, and buffalo chicken dip. If pizza isn't what you're craving, Home Slice also offers fresh salads, a full lineup of hot sandwiches, calzones made to order, desserts, and even ice cream. Whether you're looking for a quick slice, a full meal, or something to share with the table, there's no shortage of options.
That variety is part of what has kept Home Slice a downtown Toledo favorite for so many years. It's the kind of menu where first-time visitors can stick with the classics while regulars always have something new to try.

Behind the Bar at Home Slice
Upstairs Bar & Beer Selection
Beyond the pizza, Home Slice also features a spacious upstairs bar that makes it more than just a place to grab a meal. Whether you're stopping in to watch a game, meet friends after work, or continue a night out downtown, the second-floor space offers a relaxed atmosphere with plenty of seating and a rotating selection of beers on tap.
During our visit, the draft lineup included everything from easy-drinking lagers like T-Town Lager and Brooklyn Lager to craft favorites such as 3 Floyds Zombie Dust, Columbus IPA, Kona Big Wave, and Fat Tire. Summer offerings like Sam Adams Summer Ale, Saugatuck Blueberry Shandy, Mango Cart, and Cincy Lite Watermelon added some seasonal variety, while Modelo and Neon Rodeo Raspberry Sour rounded out a tap list with something for just about every beer drinker.
The upstairs bar is a great complement to the restaurant, giving guests another reason to stick around after their meal. Whether you're pairing a specialty pizza with a local craft beer or simply looking for a comfortable place to unwind downtown, Home Slice delivers an experience that goes well beyond the food.

Atmosphere
Home Slice strikes a great balance between being a casual neighborhood pizza shop and a lively downtown gathering place. It's the kind of restaurant that works for almost any occasion, whether you're bringing the family for dinner, meeting friends after work, or enjoying a date night. Having been there for a date myself, it's easy to recommend. The relaxed setting, quality food, and upstairs bar create an atmosphere that's comfortable without feeling overly formal.
Sports fans will appreciate the TVs throughout the restaurant, making it a great place to catch a game with a pizza and a cold beer. Larger groups also have plenty of space thanks to the upstairs seating area and outdoor patio, both of which offer a great setting for birthdays, celebrations, or simply spending time with friends.
The noise level is exactly what you'd expect from a busy local restaurant, energetic enough to feel lively while still allowing for easy conversation. The restaurant is clean and well maintained, and the service throughout our visit was outstanding. The staff was friendly, attentive, and happy to answer questions or make recommendations.
One of the details we appreciated most was the décor. The walls are filled with local Toledo photos and community memorabilia, giving the restaurant a hometown feel. Mixed in are drawings and artwork created by local kids, a small touch that adds personality and reinforces Home Slice's connection to the community. It's these little details that make the restaurant feel welcoming and help turn first-time visitors into regulars.

What Makes Home Slice Unique?
Every city has a few restaurants that become more than just places to eat. They become part of the community's identity. In downtown Toledo, Home Slice Pizza has earned that distinction.
One of the restaurant's biggest claims to fame is its signature Potato Pizza, a creation that's unlike anything we've come across at other local pizzerias. Topped with seasoned redskin potatoes, bacon, cheddar cheese, and served with a side of ranch or sour cream, it's an unexpected combination that has developed a loyal following over the years. If it's your first visit, it's a must-order.
Home Slice also fills an important role in downtown Toledo by staying open late. Whether you're leaving a Mud Hens game, a concert, or wrapping up a night out, it's one of the few places where you can still grab a quality meal long after many kitchens have closed. That late-night availability has made it a favorite stop for locals and visitors alike.
Perhaps most importantly, Home Slice has been a constant in downtown Toledo for nearly two decades. As restaurants have come and gone, it has remained a reliable anchor of the downtown food scene, serving generations of Toledoans and welcoming countless visitors to the city (Just ask Dave Portnoy). That's exactly why we chose Home Slice as the very first Restaurant of the Month. When launching a series dedicated to highlighting Toledo's local dining scene, it felt only right to begin with a restaurant that has helped shape it.

Our Favorites
After trying several items during our visit, a few stood out above the rest.
Favorite Pizza: The Soprano
If you're looking for one pizza that showcases what Home Slice does best, this is it. Loaded with pepperoni, sausage, mushrooms, green peppers, and onions, The Soprano delivers the perfect balance of savory meats and fresh vegetables on Home Slice's signature crispy crust. Every bite is packed with flavor, making it an easy recommendation for first-time visitors and our top pizza of the day.
Favorite Appetizer: Chicken Chunks
Don't skip the appetizers. The Chicken Chunks were a pleasant surprise, featuring tender, hand-breaded white meat chicken tossed in your choice of sauce and served with ranch or blue cheese. Crispy on the outside, juicy on the inside, and packed with flavor, they're perfect for sharing around the table or enjoying as a meal on their own.
Favorite Drink: T-Town Lager
To wash it all down, we paired our meal with a T-Town Lager from the upstairs bar. Crisp, refreshing, and easy to drink, it's the kind of local beer that complements pizza without overpowering it. If you're looking to enjoy the full Home Slice experience, ordering a pint of T-Town Lager alongside one of their specialty pizzas is hard to beat.

Final Thoughts
Home Slice Pizza is one of those restaurants that's easy to recommend to just about anyone. Whether you're visiting downtown for the first time, looking for a casual family dinner, planning a date night, or meeting friends to watch the game, Home Slice delivers an experience that fits the occasion.
The restaurant really shines on game days and after a night out downtown. Its late-night hours make it one of the best spots to grab a quality meal after the bars, while the upstairs bar provides a fun place to enjoy a drink before or after the game. During the summer months, the covered patio is another major highlight, offering a great place to relax with friends over pizza and a cold beer.
At the end of the day, what makes Home Slice special isn't just the pizza. It's the welcoming atmosphere, friendly service, and the role it has played in downtown Toledo for nearly two decades. The food is consistently good, the vibe is always fun, and it's the kind of place that keeps you coming back. We'll definitely be returning, and we think you should make it a stop on your next trip downtown.
