Inmates Nurse Puppies Back to Health

A partnership between Planned Pethood and Toledo Correctional Institution is giving bulldog puppies with swimmer syndrome a fighting chance. Four pups named Pretzel, Pancake, Pilot, and Paisley are receiving round-the-clock physical therapy from inmates who've been trained to help them overcome the rare developmental condition.

Deputy Warden Matthew Denman says the program brings normalcy and hope to the facility while giving special-needs dogs the intensive care they need. The puppies are already showing progress and will eventually be available for adoption.

Whitmer Grad Heading to National Games

Jayden Labiche, a four-time state champion runner and Whitmer High School graduate, is heading to Minneapolis next month to compete for Team Ohio at the 2026 Special Olympics USA Games. The 21-year-old will run the 800 and 1,500-meter races alongside more than 3,000 athletes from across the country.

Before leaving, Jayden joined the Special Olympics Torch Run through Lucas County with local law enforcement and supporters. His advice for others: "Try hard, be determined, keep a smile on your face."

Community Spotlight

A Home for Seniors

Collingwood Green Living just opened its doors in the Junction, offering 75 affordable apartments for adults 62 and older. With rents tied to income, it's helping seniors stay housed in a city where nearly a quarter of residents are over 60.

It's part of a bigger push by Lucas Metropolitan Housing to keep neighbors stable and the community strong.

City Updates

Goodwill Upgrades in Napoleon

The Goodwill in Napoleon is moving across the street this Friday into the old Rite Aid building on Lagrange and Scott. The new spot is nearly triple the size at 14,000 square feet and includes a drive-thru for donations, which should make drop-offs a lot easier.

A ribbon cutting is set for June 3. If the Sylvania opening earlier this year is any indication, expect a crowd.
